Whether you want to declutter your house or set up your new space in an organized way, it can be overwhelming to do it all in one go.
To make it easy for you, we’re sorting seemingly long and daunting home organization tasks into smaller, easy-to-do tasks that we also use as professional organizers. These organization ideas will take you a few minutes or 1-3 hours, depending on your bandwidth. We recommend that you can start small with smaller areas and gradually move on to bigger sections of your house.
Remember to always do just one section or space at a time so that you don’t end up with a bigger mess than the one you had, and most importantly, celebrate small wins!

Home Organizing Projects to Start With
- Junk drawers
We all have that one drawer in our home where everyone puts anything from pens, cards, batteries, tapes, torches, keys, and other miscellaneous items. To declutter, take all items out, and discard any used, broken, or unnecessary items. Group similar items together, get a few boxes or dividers and put the items in the drawer in boxes or compartments.
2. Labelling and organizing kitchen containers
It will just take a few minutes to make finding food items easier for anyone in your house. All you need to do is put a label on the containers and write the names of the items in them.
To further organize, you can categorize food items into categories such as pulses, spices, grains, etc, and place all items of a single category together on a shelf or in a cabinet.
3. Sorting your jewellery
Take out all your jewellery and segregate earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and other jewellery items in separate boxes. You can also use boxes with compartments to keep all your jewellery in one place and prevent them from tangling. In case you don’t have a lot of space available, you can go vertical by using hanging organizers which can be hung on your closet door. Go one step further in your organization goals and sort your daily and occasional jewellery sets in different boxes.
4. Dedicate a drawer for all important documents
Paperwork and random articles in a drawer are never a good combination. Important documents such as academic certificates, insurance policies, IDs, kids’ school certificates, etc. can be put in a single drawer or cabinet to make them easy to find and maintain. Have a separate folder for each family member’s documents, so that they don’t get mixed up.
5. Sorting kids’ stationery
As a parent, each one of you must have faced this – kids always asking for a specific pen or colour and you being unable to find it. Organizing stationery in boxes and labelling them would help. You can use any boxes lying around in the house such as shoe boxes, plastic boxes, etc. for this activity. I would suggest having transparent boxes to store stationery for it’s easy to see. Bonus tip: You can even make your kids learn how to declutter and organize their stuff by involving them. You’ll be surprised how much they can enjoy this activity!
6. Checking bills, letters, newspapers, and magazines
First, find a designated place. You can use baskets and magazine holders as they make for inexpensive home organization tools that add a lot of value. Put them on a table or use vertical space and hang them on a wall. If you see any bills, letters, magazines, or newspapers lying around, put them right away in their place. This will just take a minute but will have a long-lasting effect on your peace of mind. Make it a habit to check bills and mails every month and put away old newspapers and magazines to avoid piling them.
7. Making space on the kitchen countertop
Need small space organization ideas for your kitchen? Clear out the countertop, check what is there and see what you need on daily basis. Put those extra utensils in drawers or shelves. If you have a small kitchen, you can also use walls to hang pots, pans, ladles, spice racks, etc. Only keep utensils and appliances you use on a daily basis on the countertop. This will give more space while working in the kitchen.
8. Organizing your clothes
Sorting and organizing your clothes can save you time daily. You can start by taking all your clothes out; tossing out the old, worn-out clothes, ones that you don’t wear, and those that don’t fit you.
Categorize your clothes and stack them together. You can also further sort them based on regular wear, office wear, party wear, and so on based on your needs.
And now it’s time to put them back! Pile up t-shirts, jeans, and trousers and put them on shelves. You can also use dividers on the shelves to keep each clothing stack separate. Hang your saris and keep the delicate ones on shelves covered in muslin. Keep your daily wear ahead for easy access.
9. Sorting accessories: socks, belts, sunglasses, etc
Start with getting all accessories out.
Keep sunglasses in cases or boxes to avoid any damage. Check for any single sock, find its pair, and fold them together. Roll your belts for easy storage.
Divide your drawer into compartments using dividers or boxes and put your accessories back with a compartment for each accessory.
10. Remember to enjoy organizing your space!
Organizing isn’t a one-time project but a continuous one. However, that doesn’t mean you have to do it all over and over again now and often. Putting a system in place will help you reduce the amount of time you spend on decluttering and organizing. The results will not only make your home look great but also give you peace of mind.
